It´s six thirty* in the morning and I am ready to get inside my Jeep for one of the last few times before its sold, which reminded me, what do you guys drive?

since its being sold, you can enjoy my registration plates, the internet.

what is your pride and joy? your faithful steed? transporting you everyday to your nine to five, or in my case seven to one?

I suppose you have interesting cars just aching to be shown on the internet.

and if my CAD professor goes on another 45 minute tangent about his time working as an engineer in General Motors and how he was invited to have diner with an exec... well... I will appreciate your cars... on my phone as he doesn’t teach us CAD.

The LS400 is with the parents to go to the shop and find the phantom tail lamp bulb that it says is out and replace the headlight that went out two nights ago. The cops are jerks around here and WILL give a ticket, even if you are on the way that second to get it fixed.

Edit - I am driving my sisters ‘99 GS300. Feels like I got a workout on the commute to my LS400 single - finger steering ability.

though I’m getting tired of its shitty gas mileage (16 mpg) and horrible ride. I was all set to put in an order for the diesel F-150, then they announced it’d only be available to retail customers in Lariat trim and higher, which means it’s $50,000 out of the gate. now I don’t know what I’m going to do.

I daily a 1990 325i 5spd. I’ve got a 1999 540i 6spd that I need to finish fixing. But I’m actually going to Wisconsin this weekend to buy this 1989 325i 5spd.

Almost identical but its got an LSD and a tan interior. The Style 5s on my 90 were actually purchased from the guy who is selling the 89. The 89 has higher miles on the engine, but the gearbox and diff are from a donor car, and rust is nothing crazy. My 90 will become my own personal parts car, minus whatever I don’t think I’ll need like interior bits.

Rust knows no master, it kills all things. I lost part a crossmember already (due to design, I’m sure snow/salt/water sat on top of the fuel tank where it passes over and rotted it) but that will be replaced this spring and the rest of the frame and body is in really good shape considering. I need to pick up a DD in the next year or so to keep the miles and my fuel costs down.

Our cops all have to have a college degree or 10+ years experience ... In a city that see a murder maybe every 2 years and a list of vandalism's and breaks in that goes maybe a page in the local newspaper(I mean there’ s not a lot). All they really do is give tickets and attend accidents.

I daily drive a BRZ. It’s my only car.

It’s not too bad. I can fit 4 people if I absolutely have to. Three people can fit for a longer period than four. I can haul luggage for weekend trips with my girlfriend, I can buy medium sized furniture from Ikea, I can buy large pumpkins from a pumpkin patch, and it gets me to work.

That said, I’m contemplating a 370z as my next car partly because I want more power and comfort. Partly because I’m a masochist and want to see how unpractical of a car I can get away with as a daily.

I take both to work so they are both my daily drivers. Nothing beats having a convertible in Southern California so the Miata is always a treat to drive around. But then again the coilovers, racing seat, anemic power, and overall condition of the car makes it not the best thing to drive everywhere. The STi is just POWER all the time and still handles well in the twisties. It is just such a clean car and a very nice place to spend time on the road. It is JUST the right balance of raw/comfort to make the daily commute a little different from the Miata without being soul suckingly boring.

The Miata will continue to be my testbed of modifications and eventual track days. While the STi will stay as stock as possible for the forseeable future. Both cars have some miles but I am confident in my ability to perform maintenance as it comes up. So far the Miata has been more troublesome but I also just drove it 4000 miles in 10 days without anything breaking so its time was due lol.

As for today, I drove the STi again since everything is still wet outside from the rare rainfall yesterday. The Miata doesnt do wet. Nor does the Miata clear any sort of small rocks that end up on mountain roads. It was VERY slippery on the way home yesterday but the STi had no issues. Miata definitely would have been complaining on the loose dirt and crap.

Perhaps its a Mexico thing, you see, we´re pretty high up atmospherically and our fuel is really bad. I think 13:1 compression is quite high specially for an NA engine and that might be linked to my friends worrying about knock... but it means its quite efficient!

Haha well the Miata part is easy to obtain. You can get those stupid cheap! And I was doing just fine with that car as my only car. I finally have some freedom in my budget for something nice though so the STi was a good addition. I just got lucky there finding one for a good price that wasnt a piece of shit. One owner, clean title, recent maintenance, only needed tires, for $13.5k, with 136k miles. I had trouble finding a clean regular WRX for less than that with fewer miles so it was a score!

Dont envy me though when my turbo decides to shit the bed or something else catastrophic goes wrong lol. But at least either way I have sunshine nearly everyday!

That is a very difficult question to answer, actually. In short; no.

the closest to a “no fly zone” is probably Iztapalapa, call it our south central LA.

Then you just have pockets of poverty ridden slums that you really, really don´t wanna get inside, called Colonias Populares. Sometimes these Colonias are bought by developers and you see shit like million dollar listings inside private communities that have 5 meter tall walls with electric fencing just eating up the old Colonia. That´s gentrification here.. its more aggressive.

Anyway...

But Mexico City has both pockets of unsafe places and pockets of very safe places, I think the best map is this one that some foreigners are showed:

Lets call the red part the equivalent of South Central LA... in the most dangerous years. The Yellow part is your average sorta Baltimore and the green part is probably a bit worse than Atlanta when it comes to overall safety to oneself. But this map generalizes a lot. I don´t want to make a classist assumption here, but... crime does go hand in hand with poverty. As you can see, some really poor areas (hoods, call it) are spread about in the green zone.

which is interesting because if you juxtapose another map, one of average rent cost, you can see the most expensive areas, and some middle class areas have these pockets... These are called Colonias Populares, the police wouldn’t get inside those under any circumstances. If you must know, I reside in Coyoacan, work in Miguel Hidalgo, and my university is in Alvaro Obregon. if we refer back to the second map of the rough neighborhoods, as you can see, I need to pass through some everyday.

I wished I could show crime statistics but they don´t really work, you see, one of our worst problems is that people don´t actually report crime, and police officers don´t file cases... so we don´t really know what the hell is going on most of the time.

I would see that as a problem with driving any car in the city then. I would imagine that bicycling is probably about the best way to get around unless there is decent public transit. Either way, yeah I could see why not to have nice things there! At least rent is cheap in your area (like $500 USD a month) but I don’t imagine pay is the same down there so that might be a lot...

But you need to remember volume, there´s a lot of cars here, so being in a situation were you could be in danger is also mitigated. I´ve never been mugged here (Although someone stole my helmet once!) but I´ve been overly cautious, not leaving my car parked far away, never leaving valuables outside, I only use the Metro on the daytime, and I my bicycle lock is one of those foldy locks that are impossible to break. Plus, I spend most of the day at the Poniente, I only return to the south at night due to the traffic and even then Coyoacan is very safe too because its quite touristic.

Well, I use my bicycle quite often, specially in Miguel Hidalgo which is the safest place to be. Pay is quite complex too, the GDP of Mexico City is like twenty thousand dollars a year, but again... the data is so corrupted that you can´t really show an average! I think Mexico City is one of the few places in the world where you can live simultaneously in a third world country, a transitioning economy country, and a first world developed country at the same time. Like, Miguel Hidalgo for instance, Rent is at around 2400 dollars a month: its very expensive, but then again, Miguel Hidalgo has all the best services. when the earthquake hit people there didn´t really bother, they just moved on with their lives, it was a topic of conversation, not a topic of life and death like it was to people in lesser developed neighborhoods.

I consider myself a quite capitalist guy, but I look at how the neighborhoods here are divided and even I am disgusted!
